LPG & Safety

Safety is of paramount concern to all involved in the LP Gas business, from producers through the supply, storage, handling and distribution chain, through to the consumer.

The health, safety and security of employees, contractors, customers and the general public is of prime importance. Our industry strives to ensure that everyone producing, transporting, selling and using LP Gas is aware of how to do so safely and securely.

The WLPGA promotes compliance with health, safety and environment standards and good business practices throughout the LP Gas industry. We advocate these standards through our two publications ‘Good Safety Practices’ and ‘Good Business Practices’.

Members of the WLPGA sign a Code of Conduct upon joining the association to show they adhere to good safety and industry practices.

People all around the world use LP Gas safely every day for their cooking, heating, driving, camping and many other uses. To help ensure a safe environment while using LP Gas, LP Gas companies share the following brief safety tips with customers:

  • LP Gas is flammable like all petroleum fuels. It must be stored away from sources of ignition and in a well-ventilated area
  • LP Gas can be detected by a typically unpleasant odour of gas
  • LP Gas vapour is heavier than air. Any leakage will sink to the ground and accumulate in low lying areas
  • There are special tanks which are specifically designed for use underground
  • LP Gas expands rapidly when the temperature rises. So whenever a container is filled, sufficient space is left for expansion
  • LP Gas will cause natural rubber and some plastics to deteriorate. Only use hoses and other equipment specifically designed for LP Gas
  • Although LP Gas is non-toxic, it is an asphixiant and its abuse is highly dangerous. Treat LP Gas with respect

We recommend Safety is the first item on the agenda whenever discussing LP Gas. For more information on safety and LP Gas contact dtyler@worldlpgas.com
